Joel Magen comes to the showroom to start off the sale!

The big change in 2011 was getting my own electric kiln. Now I’m climbing the steep learning curve of making my own pots from start to finish, and finding my rhythm and pace in my studio. I’ve learned to not count my pots before they’re glaze fired.

This year I’m appreciating how pots evolve when you work in a series. George D points that out in his Adult Ed class; and Joel Magen works in series of hundreds upon hundreds. This year my slab bowls have evolved into Shell Bowls with a sense of the ocean and sealife-forms; and my fluted cups have evolved into waves as well – living by Monterey Bay is influencing my clay.

I started experimenting with faceting this year, and am excited about my 'lotus' teabowls and sake cups. After cutting the eight facets on the clay cylinder, you only work from the inside, pushing out and making the clay stretch against and between the facets. Making these lotus teabowls pushes me to understand the clay’s limits and potentialities.

I’ve continued making leaf plates, small and large; and experimented with various small plates, larger serving platters, bowls, sake bottles and sponge holders.
